The Passive House standard was first agreed in May 1988 through a series of test projects. The first built examples were constructed in Darmsted, Germany in 1990 as a row of four terraced houses.
The standards and technology have moved on considerably since then, with current estimates that there are 15,000-20,000 examples of these ultra-low energy buildings around the world.
But what is a Passive House (or Passivhaus in German)? It's a term that is often used but never fully understood. We found this excellent short video out on the web which provides an overview for anyone considering a passive house - all in 90 seconds!
Our thanks to Hans-Jörn Eich for this video.
